Experience one of The Gambia`s most historic sites- Kunta kinteh (formerly James lsland)
There are two ways how you can get this tour. Either by car or by boat.
With the car we will depart from the hotel 7 am drive to Banjul and cross the river by ferry to Barra, from there we will continue by car to the villages Juffureh and Albreda. It includes a boat trip to the island and a visit to the museum. We will back to the mainland drive to Barra cross the river to Banjul and drive to your hotel.
With the boat we will depart from the hotel 7 am drive to Denton Bridge we will take a boat sail to Kunta Kinteh Island, and there is possibility spotting dolphins. We will visit Juffureh and Albreda, the boat will take us back to Denton Bridge and back to the car and we drive to your hotel.
You´ve probably heard about (or read) the famous book Roots, by Alex Haley. The book is about a young Mandinka boy called Kunta Kinteh who is captured in his home village Juffure by slave traders. He is exposed to the cruelties of the westerners and is taken to America to be sold as a slave. The book tells the disturbing story of the lives of Kunta Kinteh and his descendants.
Kunta Kinteh island is a small island located in the Gambia river. It is an important historical site due to it´s history with the slave trade and has also been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
The colonialists first came to the island in 1456 in search of gold in the Gambia river. In 1661 the English got hold of the island and started using it as their base for the slave trade. The Royal African Company shipped more slaves to America than any other company.
